BATON ROUGE, LA – The LSU School of Music is pleased to announce that DMA student Po-Yu Fang has won a position in the bass section of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, considered one of the world’s best professional orchestras. Fang holds a Master of Music degree from LSU.

At just 24 years old, Fang is an accomplished classical bassist with numerous accolades to his name. Recently, he won substitute bass positions with the IndianapolisFang plays bass Symphony Orchestra and the New World Symphony, in addition to being selected as one of ten semifinalists for the 2023 International Society of Bassists Solo Competition.

Fang’s teacher, Yung-Chiao Wei commented, “Po-Yu arrived at LSU ready to compete in international solo competitions, but he has always stood out due to his incredible humility and extraordinary work ethic. He is a world-class musician who approaches every challenge with determination. Even when things become difficult – as they often do in this field – he remains focused on becoming the musician he has always aspired to be.”

While Fang has received acclaim on both national and international stages, he has also been active throughout the state of Louisiana. He won the 2023 LSU Concerto Competition, the 2023 Louisiana Bass Festival Orchestra Competition, and the 2024 Monroe Symphony Young Artist’s Concerto Competition. He was recently awarded a scholarship to attend the prestigious Aspen Music Festival in 2024.

When asked to reflect on his appointment to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Fang stated that, “This achievement would not have been possible without the support of the entire LSU family. I have always appreciated the resources, opportunities, and inspiring people surrounding me. I have never taken them for granted.”
