Calcea and her former high school classmate Ne’Kiya Jackson were named STEM trailblazers in this honor for their discovery of a new way to prove Pythagorean’s Theorem using trigonometry as part of a high school math contest.

“My advice would be to not be discouraged when things don’t work out or when people tell you ‘No.’ Perseverance is a difficult skill to develop, but the only way to develop it is through practice,” Johnson said. “Even if your work doesn’t turn out like you’d hoped, take it as a lesson in perseverance.

“I would also add that it can be helpful to set small goals, and then once you achieve those, set higher goals. If you let your work lead you, it may evolve into something more impressive than you anticipated.”

Ebony named LSU graduate and former LSU basketball star Angel Reese to the Generation Next list, honoring innovators under the age of 25 who are shaping industries and “rewriting the rules of success across music, sports, entertainment, and activism.” Former LSU track star Sha’Carri Richardson was named a Leader in Sports, which Ebony described that list as “Leadership, particularly in sports, is a jambalaya pot of savory character traits blended to create success on the court and in the community.”

The honorees were recognized at an event in Los Angeles on Nov. 17.
